The name agate is from an old locality on the achate river in southwestern Sicily. And some lore ,"Agate" comes from the Greek word "Agateeq" which means happy.

Agate's historical importance encompasses fossils, folklore, and science. Human use of Agate stone can be traced back to Stone Age man in France, circa 20,000-16,000 BC. The Egyptians were also known to have used this Agate prior to 3000 BC. It was highly valued by ancient civilizations, as it was said to render the wearer invisible.

In ancient times Agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet, it was also said to quench thirst and protect from fevers. And there are legends that tell us that Persian magicians used Agate to divert storms.

In medieval times, the wearing of Agate was said to bring God's favor and make one agreeable and persuasive, giving victory and strength to the wearer and protection from all dangers. Wearing Agate was also thought to give pleasant dreams and cure insomnia.

Early Greeks made amulets of Agate for protection from the elements of the sea. 

Some of the earliest primitive stone tools (axes) fashioned by man's ancestors 2.5 million years ago in the Omo valley in Ethiopia, were made of quartz varieties such as Agate. These Agate materials were used because of their hardness and their isotropic brittleness which made it possible to shape the tools with relative ease.

Tree Agate for Lammas, the First Harvest. Not only is there a connection with the symbolism of the Green Man, but the properties of this particular form of Agate are strongly connected to the growth and well-being of plant life and agriculture, something which was extremely important to the survival of our ancestors. Known as the "Stone of Plentitude", Tree Agate brings prosperity and abundance, especially in the form of bountiful crops and generous yields and that is very much what Lammas is all about.

Tree Agate, also known as Dendritic Agate or Moss Agate, is an opaque cryptocrystalline variety of Chalcedony Quartz.  As its alternate name Dendritic Agate suggests, this unique stone's Chlorite, Manganese or Hornblende inclusions make it appear to have distinctive mossy or tree-like markings.  These markings are called dendrites, a name derived from "dendron", the Greek word for "tree".

The ancient Greeks noted Tree Agate as a stone of abundance and would sow some into their fields to ensure a good and plentiful harvest.  Placing Tree Agate in your own garden is said to help increase the fertility of your plants and produce healthy vibrant flowers and foliage.

Small Agates were hung in fruit trees to bring about a more prolific yield. And often used as a talisman by shamans, Tree Agate was also used to predict weather, guard against natural disasters, and for locating food and water.  Agate was used to divine the degree of strength or weakness of their sick. Afterward, Agate would be used as an elixir to dispel the sickness.

This sturdy stone encourages communication with the deities of the plant kingdom and can deepen your knowledge of their realm. Agate will also prompt you to renew and revitalize your own personal connection to the Earth and her life-giving powers.  As the other two Harvest Festivals approach (and especially Samhain), Tree Agate can be used to connect us with our ancestors, our roots providing for an uncanny openness to communication with the spirit world.

Agate is said to have been one of the stones used in the breastplate of the Judaic High Priest.  Early Egyptians fashions drinking vessels out of this versatile stone.  Tree Agate was a favorite stone used in jewelry in the Victorian era.  And more currently, children's marbles were once made of Agate and subsequently called "aggies".

Agate is said to enhance one's perceptiveness and to stimulate analytical capacity, and to provide balance between one's physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual states. Agate is also said to alleviate hostilities and promote goodwill.

Black/ Banded Agate
This is a stone for grounding and centering the energies of the Root or Base Chakra.
Use for self control, grounding, resilience, quiet power, grounding, invisibility, peace and anxiety.
Black agate is considered a receiving stones and is used for calming, soothing, inward meditation and reflection.
When used for Chakra healing and balancing,
Black Agate represents the element earth, and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies and the physical plane.
Ideally, when using black stones at the Root Chakra, they bring us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.

Blue Lace Agate (energy: receptive, element: water)
Helps to focus on the inner source of love within you that transforms and heals all wounds.
Contains the qualities of flight, air, movement, and grace.
Highly inspirational when working with the inner self. Works well with not only the Throat Chakra, but the Heart, Third Eye and Crown Chakra. Strengthens hereditary skeletal structure, outward manifested growths, such as arthritis.

Botswana Agate

Fire Agate
Most often found in North America. Comes in shades of orange, brown, blue, or green. Strong connection to the energies of the earth. Excellent stone to use before meditating. Moss Agate (energy: receptive, element: earth)

Purple Agate
It is the stone of meditation and spiritual transformation. This stone works on the upper Chakra.
It assists in allowing trust with your own intuition and opens the spiritual flood gates to a realm of endless possibilities. It gives us the space to "be" our spiritual selves and clears the mind for extraordinary vision and insight. Agate is composed of microscopic crystals of Quartz laid down in colorful bands or ribbons. The appearance of Agate is waxy and soft.

Red/Banded Agate (energy: projective, element: fire)
Also known by many as the "Blood Agate" this stone was worn in ancient Rome to guard against insect bites and to heal the blood, as well as to promote calm and peace.
It is also said to drive away spiders.
This is a stone for grounding and centering the energies of the Root or Base Chakra. The color for theRoot Chakra is red or black and it is grounded with your power.
